Job Description

Term-limited one year

The Nuclear Medicine Pharmacy Fellow is a specialized role designed to provide advanced training and experience in the field of nuclear pharmacy. The fellow will assist in the development and implementation of clinical services related to radiopharmaceuticals, collaborate with medical and nursing staff, conduct medication use evaluations, and engage in quality improvement initiatives. Additionally, the fellow will participate in the clinical training of hot lab staff, residents, and NMT students.

Basic Function and Responsibility:

To assist in the development and implementation of specialized clinical services for the Department of Radiology and focused on Nuclear Medicine; obtain patient drug histories, recommend, implement, and monitor radiopharmaceutical therapy regimens for patients; conduct medication use evaluations, and participate in quality improvement and cost-containment initiatives. The fellow will also assist in the clinical training of hot lab staff, residents, and NMT students.

Essential Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Radiopharmaceutical Preparation and Dispensing:
  • Compound, prepare, and dispense radiopharmaceuticals for diagnostic imaging and therapeutic procedures according to professional standards.
  • Conduct quality control checks to ensure the purity, sterility, and accurate dosage of radiopharmaceuticals.

Clinical Consultation and Collaboration:

  • Consult with nursing and medical staff regarding prescriptions, orders, drug and radiopharmaceutical details, patient reactions, errors, and complaints.
  • Participate in rounds with medical staff, helping establish individualized patient drug therapy programs.
  • Monitor drug therapy in collaboration with the medical staff and suggest alternative drug therapy when appropriate.

Patient Care:

  • Interview patients to obtain detailed drug histories and counsel them regarding proper drug dosage and possible side effects.
  • Manage drug therapy regimens according to medical staff-approved protocols.

Research and Development:

  • Develop research programs and projects related to the utilization and effectiveness of clinical nuclear pharmacy practice.
  • Participate in the dispensing of research radiopharmaceuticals, monitoring of research subject safety, provide accurate records for monitor visits
  • Work with the Department of Pharmacy research group to implement usage of the Vestigo software platform for use with all Division of Nuclaer Medicine research projects.
  • Publish articles on nuclear pharmacy practice in internal communications and professional journals.

Quality Assurance and Utilization Review:

  • Conduct Drug Utilization Reviews and prepare Drug Review Criteria for medical staff review and approval.
  • Participate in medical staff or hospital committees dealing with medication use.

Educational Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the development of staff educational and training programs within and relating to the Clinical Division.
  • Participate in the training of staff, residents, and Nuclear Medicine Technologist students working in the Division of Nuclear Medicine.

Operational Efficiency:

  • Maintain organized inventory and records of radiopharmaceuticals dispensed.
  • Process patient care orders using the electronic ordering system as required.

Related Duties:

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Supervision Received:
  • General supervision is received from the operations director, or nuclear medicine pharmacist. or other designated officials.
  • Physical Requirements:
  • This position requires moderate standing/walking, as well as lifting, positioning, pushing, and/or transferring of patients.
  • Ability to handle and manipulate small objects and materials with precision and safely handle radioactive materials.

Working Conditions:

  • This position involves working in a controlled environment within a hospital or healthcare facility.
  • Exposure to low-level radioactive materials, with strict adherence to safety protocols to ensure minimal risk.

Education: Doctorate of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree from Purdue University School of Pharmacy.

Licensure: Current registration as a Registered Pharmacist by the State of Michigan and possession of a state narcotics license.

  • Eligible for NRC authorized user status (proof of completion: 200 hour didactic and 500 hour hand on training)
  • Experience: Experience in clinical nuclear pharmacy practice and didactic & clinical teaching, including undergraduate and postgraduate level courses including radiation safety & instrumentation.

40 hours per week

This is a term-limited appointment.  At the end of the term, the appointment will terminate and will not be eligible for Reduction in Force (RIF) Benefits.
